Preparation: Collect Tools, Supplies, and Protective Equipment
It is wise to be properly equipped with everything needed so as not to cause interruption and/or mistakes.
Tools (As Applicable to the Type of Screw Head)
Machine screws have different heads, so make sure to choose the tool fitting the proper type to avoid stripping the screw head:
Slotted/Flathead screws: Flathead screwdriver (matching the width and length of the slot).
Phillips/Pozidriv screws: Phillips screwdriver (PH0/PH1/PH2) or Pozidriv screwdriver (PZ1/PZ2) (matching the size of the head).
Hex/Allen head screws: Hex key (Allen wrench), Hex socket wrench (matching size of the hex hole).
Hexagon flange head screws: Open end wrench, socket wrench, or adjustable wrench (matching size of the flange).
Precision scenarios (e.g. electronics, machinery): Torque wrench (for accurately controlling the force to tighten).
Auxiliary tools: Wire brush (to remove rust and debris), thread tap (to repair screw holes slightly damaged), pliers (for holding small parts).

"I use #4-40 and M3 machine screws all the time for building/modifying things. I used flat heads to finish a custom PC case and pan heads to secure a 3D printer bracket in place. These screws were a good quality, sharp, consistent threads, and the Phillips drives don't strip (which is a big issue with cheaper screws).
